"The Sinus Lamp was originally designed in 1967, when attempts were made to produce it in plastic. But Piet Hein was dissatisfied with the result until he saw it in glass. The floating forms of the Sinus Lamp are the epitome of clean, Scandinavian lines, which are familiar to us from the Golden Age of Danish Design and its leading figures, who included Verner Panton, Arne Jacobsen, Børge Mogensen and Hans Wegner. Piet Hein wrote a book in praise of the design of the sine wave and saw it as a symbol of all the amazing living forms in the world. It is not just the hand-blown opal glass that brings out the poetry of the lamp design. In Piet Hein’s own notebooks it is possible to read how he set himself a specific task with the Sinus Lamp. He took the sine wave as his inspiration because it is a mathematically harmonious form, but also because it represents an ideal in terms of lighting technology. The curved forms of the lamp ensure that the light is bright precisely where it is needed, but not dazzling in the direction of the eye.
